FSSAI stands for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. It is the national body that controls the safety and quality of food sold in India. Every person or business that makes, stores, sells, serves or imports food must get a licence or registration from FSSAI under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
After approval, you get a 14-digit FSSAI number. This number must be printed on your food packets, bills and invoices. It tells your customers that your food business is registered with the government and follows the basic rules of food safety.

FSSAI has three types of approval. Which one you need depends mainly on your yearly turnover and the type of business.
