What is a TAN?
TAN stands for Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number. It is a 10-character code of letters and numbers issued by the Income Tax Department to a person or business who must deduct tax at source (TDS) or collect tax at source (TCS).
If your business pays salary, rent, professional fees, contractor charges or interest above the set limits, you may have to cut tax from that payment and deposit it with the government. TAN is the number you must use for this work.
CA Arpit Gupta helps businesses apply for a new TAN, correct their TAN details and complete TDS filings after getting the TAN.
Why is TAN Important for a Business?
TAN must be quoted in all papers related to TDS and TCS. Without it, you cannot deposit TDS or file the TDS return properly.
TAN is needed in:
- TDS and TCS payment challans
- TDS and TCS quarterly returns
- TDS certificates such as Form 16 and Form 16A
- Other documents related to tax deducted at source
Who Needs a TAN?
You need a TAN if you are required to deduct or collect tax at source. This includes:
- Private Limited Companies and Public Limited Companies
- LLPs and partnership firms
- Employers who pay salary to staff
- Businesses paying rent, professional fees, commission or contractor charges above the limit
- Trusts, societies and associations that make such payments
- Government offices that deduct tax
- Sellers who collect TCS on certain sales

Which Form is Used for TAN Application?
Form 49B is used to apply for a new TAN and also to make changes or corrections in an existing TAN. The application is made online through the authorised agencies, NSDL (Protean) and UTIITSL.
What Details and Documents Are Needed for a TAN Application?
Form 49B usually does not need documents to be attached. But you must fill the correct details, so keep these ready:
- Name of the entity as per registration
- PAN of the entity
- Certificate of Incorporation or registration proof
- Address of the office where TDS will be handled
- Name, designation and details of the person responsible for deducting tax
- Email ID and mobile number
- Category of the deductor (company, firm, LLP, trust, government and so on)
- Details of the Assessing Officer for the area, which we help you find

What Happens If a Business Does Not Get or Quote a TAN?
- Penalty: A penalty of ₹10,000 can be charged for not applying for TAN when required, or for not quoting it in the right place
- Returns cannot be filed: TDS returns need a valid TAN
- Late fee on TDS returns: A fee applies for every day of delay in filing
- Interest: Interest is charged for late deduction or late deposit of TDS
- Disallowance of expenses: In some cases, a part of the expense can be disallowed if TDS is not deducted or deposited
- Notices: The department can send notices for non-compliance
Applying on time costs much less than facing these results.
How Can You Correct or Update Your TAN Details?
You can request a correction for:
- Name of the deductor
- Address or contact details
- Category of the deductor
- Details of the person responsible
- Spelling errors
The correction is made through Form 49B using the correction option. The TAN code remains the same. If your TAN is lost, we help you find it on the Income Tax portal using your name or PAN, and help you get a new copy of the allotment letter.
